If you've started pricing up a deck, handrail, or set of structural beams, you've probably noticed that Merbau comes in two very different forms: solid sawn timber and glue-laminated (glulam) timber. Both are genuinely Merbau — same species, same natural strength and durability — but how the timber is milled and engineered changes how it performs, how far it can span, and how much it costs. Here's a straight-up comparison to help you choose the right one for your project.

What's the Difference?

Solid Merbau is timber cut directly from a single log. It's the traditional choice — dense, heavy, and prized for its rich reddish-brown colour and natural grain.

Glulam (laminated) Merbau is made by finger-jointing and gluing shorter, narrower sections of Merbau together under pressure to form longer, straighter, more dimensionally stable beams, posts, and handrails. It's still 100% Merbau timber — just engineered for consistency and strength.

Strength and Structural Performance

Both products are typically rated F27, so on paper their strength grade is comparable. Where glulam pulls ahead is consistency. Because natural defects like knots, gum veins, and shakes are cut out during manufacturing, laminated beams have fewer weak points along their length, which means more predictable load performance — especially important for long structural spans like beams and bearers.

Solid Merbau is still an excellent structural performer (it's naturally one of the toughest, most decay- and termite-resistant timbers available, and it's approved for use in bushfire-prone areas), but longer solid lengths are harder to source without natural characteristics like knots or minor checking, which can affect both appearance and, in some cases, structural capacity.

Stability: Warping, Twisting, and Checking

This is where glulam really shines. The gluing and pressing process relieves internal stresses in the timber, so laminated Merbau is significantly less prone to warping, twisting, cupping, and surface checking than solid sections — particularly in larger dimensions like 90x90 posts or long handrails and beams. Solid Merbau, being a single piece of timber, will move more with changes in moisture and temperature, especially in thicker sections.

If you're building something highly visible — a feature beam, an exposed handrail run, or a large post — glulam's stability is a genuine advantage.

Appearance

Solid Merbau has an unbroken, natural grain that many customers prefer for its authenticity — no visible joints, just one continuous piece of timber. Glulam Merbau, by contrast, will show fine finger-joint lines along its length once it weathers or is oiled, though these become less noticeable over time and with a darker oil finish. For decking boards, screening, and battens where the timber is viewed up close, solid is often the preferred aesthetic choice.

Length and Availability

Glulam is the clear winner if you need long, straight lengths — structural beams and handrails in particular are far easier to source in laminated form, since manufacturers can join shorter sections to reach 6m, 9m, or longer without relying on scarce long solid logs. Solid Merbau in longer lengths tends to be special order, subject to log availability, and can carry longer lead times.

Cost

Solid Merbau is generally more cost-effective in shorter, standard lengths (posts, battens, step treads, decking boards), where the manufacturing overhead of laminating isn't needed. Glulam typically carries a premium, reflecting the extra processing — but for long spans, that premium can actually work out cheaper than trying to source an equivalent long length of clear solid timber, and you get better stability for the money.
