The Best Coating for Merbau Timber: Woca vs Intergrain (Expert Guide)

Brought to you by Decking Wood QLD — Brisbane's Merbau Specialists

If you've just had a Merbau deck installed, or you're planning one, the coating you choose is arguably as important as the timber itself. Merbau is prized for its deep red-brown tones and outstanding durability, but like any hardwood exposed to the elements, it needs the right protective finish to keep looking its best. Two of the most talked-about products on the Australian market are Woca Exterior Oil and Intergrain Universal Timber Oil — and for good reason. Below, we break down how each performs on Merbau, and which one (or combination) makes sense for your project.

Why Merbau Needs a Quality Coating

Merbau is a dense, naturally oily hardwood with high tannin content. Left uncoated, it will silver off over time and can bleed tannins onto surrounding surfaces during rain. A good coating does three things:

  1. Enhances the natural grain and colour — bringing out the rich red-brown tones Merbau is known for
  2. Provides UV protection — slowing the greying/silvering process caused by sun exposure
  3. Repels moisture — reducing cupping, splitting, and water damage over time

Woca Exterior Oil

Woca is a Danish brand that has built a strong reputation in Australia for timber care products, particularly on flooring, but its exterior oil range has become a popular choice for premium decking projects.

Strengths on Merbau:

  • Excellent at enhancing and highlighting natural grain patterns rather than sitting on top of the timber as a film
  • Water-based formulation, making application and clean-up straightforward for DIY and professional applicators alike
  • Low-odour and lower VOC than many oil-based alternatives, which matters if you're working close to living areas
  • Good UV stabilisers for Australian conditions

Considerations:

  • As a water-based product, it forms more of a protective surface film compared to deep-penetrating oils, so on a naturally oily timber like Merbau, proper surface preparation (cleaning off surface oils before the first coat) is essential for good adhesion
  • Recoat intervals will depend on sun and foot traffic exposure — high-UV, high-traffic areas may need attention every 6–12 months

Intergrain Universal Timber Oil

Intergrain (a Dulux-owned brand) is one of the most widely used and trusted decking oil brands in Australia, and Merbau is one of the timbers it's most commonly applied to.

Strengths on Merbau:

  • Deep-penetrating, oil-based formulation that soaks into the dense grain of Merbau rather than just sitting on the surface
  • Well regarded for not flaking, blistering, or peeling — a common failure point with lower-quality film-forming products on hardwood decking
  • Widely available with a strong local track record specifically on Merbau decks around Australia
  • Can be tinted using Intergrain's colour additive range if you want to adjust the final tone

Considerations:

  • Being oil-based, it typically requires longer drying time between coats than water-based options
  • On a fresh-sawn or newly installed Merbau deck, allowing a short weathering period (commonly a few weeks) before the first coat helps the timber's surface tannins stabilise and improves oil penetration

Woca vs Intergrain: Which Is Better for Merbau?

There isn't a single "correct" answer — it depends on your priorities:

Priority Better Fit
Maximum grain enhancement, low-odour application Woca Exterior Oil
Deep penetration into dense hardwood, proven track record on Merbau Intergrain Universal Timber Oil
High-traffic commercial or pool-side decks Intergrain (oil-based penetration handles heavy wear well)
DIY-friendly application and clean-up Woca (water-based)

Many experienced applicators in Queensland actually use a two-stage approach on Merbau: a penetrating oil like Intergrain for the base coats to lock in deep protection, then a Woca-style finishing coat to lift the grain and refine the final look. This isn't necessary for every project, but it's worth discussing with your supplier if you want a premium result.

Our Recommendation

For most Merbau decks in South-East Queensland's climate — high UV, humid summers, heavy rain events — Intergrain Universal Timber Oil remains the more field-proven choice for long-term protection on dense hardwood, particularly for decks that see regular foot traffic or direct sun. Woca is an excellent option where the priority is grain enhancement and a lower-odour, water-based application process, especially for feature areas or lower-traffic decking.

Whichever product you choose, the fundamentals matter most:

  • Clean and prepare the timber surface thoroughly before the first coat
  • Allow new Merbau to weather briefly before coating so tannins settle
  • Apply thin, even coats rather than one heavy coat
  • Recoat before the timber visibly greys — maintenance coats are far easier than restoration
