1. What's your deck frame made from?
This is the hidden structure underneath your deck boards — the part that holds everything up.
2. How big is your deck?
Measure in millimetres (mm). If you only have metres, multiply by 1000 — e.g. 4.8m = 4800mm.
3. Joists & bearers
Joists are the beams directly under your boards; bearers are the bigger beams underneath those, resting on your posts. If you're not sure, our defaults below are a sensible starting point.
4. Decking boards
The boards you'll actually walk on. Timber needs oiling to stay protected; composite doesn't.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Hardwood F27 sizing not auto-checked like Pine?
We use a verified engineering table for Pine MGP10 H3 framing, so we can tell you straight away if your chosen sizes are safe. A verified public span table for solid F27 hardwood wasn't available when we built this tool, so F27 sizes are offered as a manual choice from our real stock rather than an automatic pass/fail. Please confirm final F27 spans with AS1684.2 or a structural engineer before building.
Do I need a balustrade?
Generally yes if your deck's open edge finishes higher than about 1 metre above the ground — but the exact rule depends on your council and the National Construction Code. If in doubt, ask a certified builder before you build.
Why 450mm joist centres?
450mm is the standard, conservative spacing used for timber deck joists in residential construction, and what we build every recommendation around.
How is the composite fixing quantity worked out?
For KlevaKlip systems (ModWood) we use 1 box of clips and 1 box of screws per 9m² of decking. For Eva-Last Halo Clip we calculate the exact number of clips from the manufacturer's rule of two clips at every joist. Trex quantities use the same estimate as KlevaKlip pending a confirmed manufacturer rate.
