Laminated Merbau Screening
1. What is laminated Merbau screening?
Laminated Merbau screening is made by bonding selected pieces of Merbau timber together to create a screening batten. It can provide a consistent, engineered section and is particularly useful where longer lengths, dimensional stability or specific profiles are required. Our range includes products such as GL17S laminated Merbau, including 67×12mm and other screening batten profiles.
2. Why choose laminated Merbau instead of solid Merbau screening?
Laminated Merbau can be a practical option when you want a more engineered timber section, particularly for longer lengths or larger profiles. The individual laminations are bonded together to form the finished batten, while retaining the natural appearance and durability characteristics of Merbau.
3. Is laminated Merbau suitable for outdoor screening?
Yes. Merbau is a dense hardwood commonly used for outdoor applications, including privacy screens, fencing, pergolas and feature structures. Appropriate fixing, spacing, drainage and finishing are still important for outdoor performance.
Solid Merbau Screening
4. What is solid Merbau screening?
Solid Merbau screening is machined from solid Merbau timber rather than being manufactured by joining multiple laminations. Decking Wood QLD offers solid Merbau screening in several profiles, including 31×11, 42×11, 42×19 and 70×19mm, with kiln-dried and dressed options available.
5. What can I use solid Merbau screening for?
It can be used for privacy screens, fencing, balustrade infill, feature walls, pool-area screening and decorative architectural applications. The choice of batten size and spacing will depend on the level of privacy, appearance and structural requirements of your project.
6. Is solid Merbau screening kiln dried and dressed?
Many of the solid Merbau screening products are supplied KD (kiln dried) and DAR (Dressed All Round). A DAR finish means the timber is dressed on all four sides, giving the batten a clean and consistent appearance from different viewing angles. Always check the individual product specification for the exact profile and finish.
Solid New Guinea Rosewood Screening
7. Why choose New Guinea Rosewood for screening?
New Guinea Rosewood offers a different visual character from Merbau, with warm golden-brown to red-brown tones and a refined natural grain. It is available from Decking Wood QLD in screening/batten profiles including 42×19mm and 65×19mm, as well as other sizes.
8. Can Rosewood screening be used outdoors?
New Guinea Rosewood is a natural hardwood used for outdoor screening, feature walls and fencing applications. As with any natural timber installed outdoors, appropriate detailing, fixing, drainage and ongoing maintenance are important for long-term performance.
Pre-Fabricated Timber Screening
9. What is pre-fabricated timber screening?
Pre-fabricated screening is supplied as a ready-made batten screen panel, rather than individual lengths of timber that need to be assembled from scratch. Our panels are made using 19×42mm DAR battens and are available in Merbau or Bangkirai Yellow Balau, in several panel sizes and batten-gap options.
10. What sizes are the pre-fabricated screens available in?
The current range includes panels measuring 1800×900mm, 2100×900mm, 2400×900mm and 2700×900mm, with a choice of 8mm or 18mm gaps between the battens.
11. Can pre-fabricated screens be trimmed to fit?
Yes. The panels are designed to provide a convenient starting point for installation and can be trimmed to suit smaller gaps or infill requirements, subject to the project layout.
12. Can pre-fabricated timber screens be used horizontally or vertically?
Yes. The current product is designed for flexible installation and can be used horizontally, vertically or overhead, making it suitable for privacy screens, walls, ceilings, fences and freestanding architectural features.
13. Are the pre-fabricated screens ready to finish?
The raw-finish screens are supplied ready for the customer to oil or stain according to their preferred appearance. They are fixed using galvanised screws and can be finished to complement other timber elements in the project.
Choosing Your Screening
14. How do I choose between laminated Merbau, solid Merbau, Rosewood and pre-fabricated screening?
Choose based on the look you want, batten size, required length, installation method and project requirements. Solid Merbau provides the traditional appearance of a solid hardwood batten; laminated Merbau can provide an engineered alternative for particular profiles and lengths; Rosewood offers a different natural colour and grain character; and pre-fabricated screens provide a convenient ready-made panel solution. For a custom screen, individual battens give you greater control over spacing and layout, while pre-fabricated panels can simplify installation.
