ModWood Composite Decking and Screening

Common Questions – ModWood Composite Decking

The ModWood Range

1. What ModWood products does Decking Wood QLD supply?

We carry the ModWood decking and screening range together with the matching fixing systems, so a whole deck can be ordered from one place.

  • Natural Range / Natural Grain — the core decking boards, 137×23mm and 88×23mm in 5.4m.
  • XTREME GUARD — the capped board, 137×23mm in 5.4m, in grooved and square profile.
  • Flame Shield — 137×23mm in 5.4m, for projects with a bushfire requirement.
  • Marina — a heavier 137×32mm board in 4.2m.
  • Mini Board — 68×17mm in 4.8m, for narrow boards, steps, edges and screening.
  • Fasteners — KlevaKlip concealed clips, KlevaKlip screws and coloured face screws.
2. Is ModWood made in Australia?

Yes. ModWood is Australian designed and Australian manufactured, and states that approximately 90% of the material it uses is recycled or reclaimed — including reclaimed plantation pine waste and recycled plastics.

For customers who want to keep the spend onshore, it is the Australian-made option in our composite range.

3. Which ModWood board should I use?

Start with what the deck has to do.

  • A standard domestic deck — Natural Range 137×23mm grooved. The 88×23mm board gives a narrower, closer-spaced look.
  • Maximum stain and fade protection — XTREME GUARD, which adds a protective cap on all four faces.
  • A bushfire-prone site — Flame Shield, checked against the requirements applying to your address.
  • A heavier, more substantial board — Marina at 137×32mm.
  • Steps, edges, narrow runs and screening — the 68×17mm Mini Board.

Tell us the deck size, the frame material and whether it is exposed or covered, and we will narrow it down with you.

4. Can ModWood be used for screening and privacy screens?

Yes. ModWood screening uses the same boards, fixed vertically or horizontally with a gap rather than laid as a deck surface.

The two profiles most used for it are the 88×23mm board and the 68×17mm Mini Board. The Mini Board gives a finer, more closely spaced screen; the 88mm board gives more presence and covers a given height in fewer boards.

Because it is the same board, you can run a deck and its privacy screen in the same colour and finish — which is normally what people are after.

Colours & Matching

5. What colours does ModWood come in?

There are two separate colour families, and this catches people out, so it is worth reading before you order.

Natural Range, Natural Grain, Flame Shield, Marina and Mini Board:

  • Blackbean
  • Jarrah
  • Sahara
  • Silver Gum

XTREME GUARD:

  • Charwood
  • Fire Brick
  • Sandy Bay
  • Koko Brown
  • Magnetic Grey

Availability varies with stock, so confirm the colour on the product page before you plan around it.

6. Can I mix XTREME GUARD with the other ModWood boards?

Structurally you can, but the colours do not cross over. XTREME GUARD has its own colour set, and none of the names match the Natural Range, Flame Shield, Marina or Mini Board colours.

This matters in practice. If you deck in XTREME GUARD and then want a Mini Board edge detail or a matching screen, there is no Mini Board in Charwood or Magnetic Grey. The reverse applies too — a Sahara deck cannot be edged in an XTREME GUARD board.

Decide the colour family first, then pick the profiles within it. If you need both a deck and a screen, or a deck and a step detail, tell us up front and we will check the profiles you want all exist in the colour you want.

7. Will every board be exactly the same colour?

No, and that is deliberate. ModWood boards are made with colour variation through the board to avoid the flat, uniform look that gives cheap composite decking away.

XTREME GUARD in particular uses a deep embossed grain and a multi-chromatic finish to read more like natural timber. Expect variation between boards; it is what makes the finished deck look right.

XTREME GUARD

8. What is ModWood XTREME GUARD?

XTREME GUARD is ModWood's capped board. A protective cap is applied to all four faces, not just the top, which is what separates it from an uncapped composite board.

That cap is what resists mould, mildew, staining, fading and scratching. The board is 137×23mm in 5.4m, with a deep embossed grain and a multi-chromatic timber-inspired finish, and it is splinter-free.

9. Is XTREME GUARD worth the extra over the Natural Range?

It depends on where the deck is going.

For a fully exposed deck — full sun, no cover, or anywhere that sees food, drinks and sunscreen — the cap does real work on staining and fading, and that is where the extra is justified.

For a covered alfresco or a shaded deck, the Natural Range does the job and the extra protection is less of a factor. It also gives you the Blackbean, Jarrah, Sahara and Silver Gum colours, which the capped range does not.

10. Does XTREME GUARD come in a square edge?

Yes. XTREME GUARD is available as a grooved board and as a square profile board, both 137×23mm in 5.4m.

The grooved board takes concealed clips. The square profile board is used where a clip cannot work — the starting board, the perimeter, irregular deck shapes and awkward edges — and is face fixed with a colour-matched screw.

Most decks need some of both. Allow for the square profile board on your first course and your edges rather than discovering it mid-build.

11. Is XTREME GUARD slip rated?

The boards carrying a published R11 rating in our range are the Natural Range grooved board, Flame Shield and Marina.

XTREME GUARD is not listed with that rating here. If a specific slip rating is part of your requirement — a pool surround, a commercial job, anything being certified — confirm the current figure for XTREME GUARD from ModWood's technical documentation before you commit, or use one of the R11 rated boards.

Fixings & Fasteners

12. What is KlevaKlip and why use it?

KlevaKlip is the concealed fixing system for ModWood. The clip sits under the board and engages the groove, so the deck surface has no rows of screw heads across it.

It also sets the gap between boards for you, which is the other half of the value — consistent spacing across the whole deck without measuring every board.

We stock the nylon clips in packs of 40.

13. Which KlevaKlip do I need?

The clip must match the board width. We stock two:

  • KlevaKlip for 137mm ModWood — for the 137mm boards.
  • KlevaKlip for 88mm ModWood — for the 88mm boards.

Do not substitute a clip from another decking brand. The clip controls board retention and spacing, and a clip designed for a different profile will not hold or space correctly. Check the board profile, then order the clip that matches it.

14. What screws go with the KlevaKlips?

The clips and the screws are ordered separately, and the screw depends on your frame:

  • BH201 — timber joist, 25×8g. Box of 350.
  • BH301 — metal joist, 18×10g wafer head with a drill point. Box of 350.

Ordering clips and forgetting the screws is the single most common omission on a ModWood order. Work out your clip count first, then match the screw box to it.

15. What if I need to face fix instead?

Coloured decking screws are available for face fixing, colour matched to the board, in boxes of 100. Again the frame decides which one:

  • Timber joist — 316 stainless coloured screw.
  • Metal joist — 410 stainless coloured screw.
  • XTREME GUARD, timber joist — a dedicated 305 stainless coloured screw.

You will need face screws even on a concealed-fixed deck, for the starting board, the perimeter and any board a clip cannot reach. Order a box with the clips rather than stopping work later.

16. I am fixing XTREME GUARD to a steel frame — which screw?

Contact us before ordering. The dedicated XTREME GUARD coloured screw is currently listed for timber joists only, so a steel-framed XTREME GUARD deck needs the correct fastener confirmed rather than assumed.

Tell us the board colour and the frame, and we will confirm what is available and what ModWood specifies for that combination.

17. Can ModWood be installed on timber or steel joists?

Yes, both. What changes is the fastener, not the board.

Every fixing in the range comes in a timber version and a metal version — the KlevaKlip screws (BH201 timber, BH301 metal) and the coloured face screws (316 stainless timber, 410 stainless metal). Confirm your frame material before ordering, because the wrong screw either will not drill in or will not hold.

Installation

18. How far apart should the joists be?

ModWood's current installation information lists a maximum support centre of 450mm for the 137×23mm XTREME GUARD board, subject to the loading and installation conditions.

Spacing differs by profile, so check the figure for the exact board you are laying, and do not carry over the spacing you would use for a hardwood deck. Stair treads, and diagonal or herringbone patterns, normally need closer centres again.

19. Does ModWood expand and contract?

Yes. All composite decking moves with temperature, and in a Queensland summer that movement is real.

This is exactly why the end gaps, side gaps, perimeter clearances and ventilation in ModWood's fixing instructions are not optional. A deck laid tight in winter will push against itself in February. Follow the current fixing instructions for the board you are laying, and allow more in a hot, fully exposed position.

20. Does ModWood need ventilation underneath?

Yes. The frame has to provide the clearance and cross-flow airflow set out in the installation instructions, along with drainage.

Composite decking should not be laid straight onto ground, sand or an unsuitable surface. Trapped moisture under the deck causes more problems than anything else on an otherwise well-built job.

21. Is ModWood suitable for a DIY install?

The concealed clip system makes it very manageable for an owner-builder or an experienced DIY installer — the clips do the spacing for you, which removes most of the fiddly part.

The things that still have to be right are joist spacing, expansion gaps, ventilation, edge details and the correct clip for the profile. None of them are difficult, but all of them are difficult to fix afterwards. Come in or call with your deck dimensions and frame details before you order and we will go through the list with you.

Maintenance & Buying

22. Does ModWood need painting, staining or oiling?

No. There is no sanding, staining or oiling cycle, which is the main reason people move across from a timber deck.

Upkeep is washing and sweeping to clear dirt, leaves and debris — including out of the board gaps, which matters more in Queensland than most places after a wet season.

23. Is ModWood splinter-free?

Yes. It is a manufactured board rather than sawn timber, and gives a splinter-free surface.

For entertaining areas, patios and pool surrounds — anywhere the deck gets used barefoot — this is usually what decides it against natural timber.

24. Can ModWood be used around pools?

Yes, and pool surrounds are a common use. Choose the board with the slip rating in mind: the Natural Range grooved board, Flame Shield and Marina are the R11 rated options in our range.

Also weigh up drainage, how hot the colour will get underfoot, and the fixing method. As with any composite, darker colours get hotter in direct sun.

25. Does ModWood get hot in the sun?

Yes — like every decking material. Darker colours get hotter.

If the deck faces west or north with no shade and will be walked on barefoot, favour the lighter colours in whichever range you choose. It is a much easier decision to make before ordering than after the deck is down.

26. Can Decking Wood QLD supply the complete ModWood system?

Yes — boards, clips, clip screws and colour-matched face screws, quantified for your deck rather than guessed at, plus the structural timber, joists, bearers, posts and post supports underneath.

Send us your deck dimensions, your frame material and the colour you are after, and we will work out the board, clip and screw quantities, check the profiles you need all exist in that colour, and tell you what is on the shelf. We supply trade and retail, deliver across Queensland, and you can collect from our Archerfield warehouse in Brisbane.
