Choosing a Bracket
1. What does the bracket range cover?
- Anchor — the Tuff Post Anchor High Wind range, for uplift and hold-down.
- Angle Bracket — the main general-purpose range, 5mm to 8mm, also in 316 stainless.
- Angle Connector — longer bracket lengths for beam and post connections.
- Heavy Duty Angle Bracket and Heavy-Use Angle Bracket — two separate ranges, see below.
- Light-Use Angle Bracket — 3mm, for light and non-structural work.
- Shelf Angle Bracket — for supporting a member off a wall or face.
2. How do I read the bracket sizes?
Angle brackets are written as leg × leg × width × thickness. A 100×100×50×5mm bracket has two 100mm legs, is 50mm wide and 5mm thick.
The last number is the one that matters most — it is the steel thickness, and it is what separates a light bracket from a structural one. A 100×100 in 3mm and a 100×100 in 5mm look similar on screen and are not the same product.
Some brackets also list a bolt size, such as M10 or M12, where the hole is sized for a specific bolt.
3. What is the difference between Light-Use, Heavy Duty and Heavy-Use brackets?
This is worth reading carefully, because the names are close together and the thicknesses are not.
- Light-Use Angle Bracket — 3mm, in 40×40, 50×50, 75×75 and 100×100, all 40mm wide. Plain or galvanised. For light framing and non-structural work.
- Heavy Duty Angle Bracket — also 3mm, but in deeper sections: 60 and 100mm legs with widths of 35, 70, 105 and 140mm. The extra width, not extra thickness, is what makes them stronger.
- Heavy-Use Angle Bracket — 5mm, in 50×50, 75×75, 100×100, 150×150 and 200×200, 40mm wide. Plain or galvanised. This is the thickest of the three and the one for real structural load.
If you want the strongest of these, it is the Heavy-Use range at 5mm — not the one called Heavy Duty. Check the thickness in the product name rather than going by the category name.

4. What sizes are in the main Angle Bracket range?
It is the broadest range we carry, from 5mm through to 8mm:
- Square, 5mm — 40×40×40 and 50×50×50 (in M10 and M12), 65×65×65.
- Rectangular, 5mm — 40×80×40, 50×100×50, 65×130×65, 100×100×50, 130×130×65.
- 6mm — 75×75, 90×90×90, 90×150×75, 150×150×75.
- 8mm — 100×75, the heaviest in the range.
Cartons of 10 or 25 depending on size. 316 stainless is available in 50×50×50×5 M12, 50×100×50×5 and 80×80×40×5.
5. When would I use an Angle Connector instead of an Angle Bracket?
When the connection needs length rather than a corner. Angle connectors run from 75mm up to 290mm along the member, which spreads the load over a much longer area of timber.
We stock galvanised connectors including 75×75×75, 100×100×100, 140×75×50×5, 150×63×63, 150×100×100, 180×150×150, 190×65×65×5, 200×100×100, 200×140×90, 240×63×63, 250×100×100 and 290×75×50×5.
There is also a Variable 150×75×50×5, for connections that are not at a right angle.
6. What do I use for a connection that is not square?
The Variable Angle Connector 150×75×50×5 is made for it — raked pergola rafters, angled bracing and anywhere the two members do not meet at 90 degrees.
Do not force a fixed bracket to a different angle. Bending a bracket on site changes its capacity and is not something you can rely on structurally.
Anchors & Shelf Brackets
7. What are the Anchor brackets?
The Tuff Post Anchor High Wind range — heavy anchors for uplift and hold-down, used where wind loading is part of the design.
Sizes are in M12: 90mm and 100mm post sizes in 300, 400, 450 and 600mm heights, 115mm and 125mm in 600mm, and 140mm in 450 and 600mm. Also available in 316 stainless.
These are the same anchors listed under post supports. Choose the size from the structural design — for a roofed or elevated structure, have it confirmed by a suitably qualified building professional or structural engineer.
8. What is a Shelf Angle Bracket for?
Supporting a member or a shelf off a wall or a vertical face, where the load is cantilevered outwards rather than sitting in a corner.
We stock five sizes, all 20mm wide and 5mm thick: 100×75, 125×100, 150×125, 200×150 and 250×200mm. Available galvanised or zinc.
9. Should I choose galvanised or zinc?
Galvanised for anything outdoors or in a damp area. The zinc coating is thicker and it is what stands up to weather.
Zinc is a lighter coating, suited to internal and protected applications where the bracket will stay dry.
Several brackets are stocked in both, so check which finish you are adding to the cart — they sit next to each other in the listing.
Fixing & Finishing
10. Do I need to fill every hole in the bracket?
Fill the holes the manufacturer specifies. A bracket's rated capacity assumes the specified fastener pattern — leaving holes empty reduces what it can carry.
Use the right fastener for the hole as well. Where a bracket is listed as M10 or M12, the hole is sized for that bolt, and a smaller bolt with a washer is not the same connection.
11. Which brackets are available in stainless?
316 stainless is available in the Angle Bracket range — 50×50×50×5 M12, 50×100×50×5 and 80×80×40×5 — and across the high-wind anchors.
For coastal sites, use stainless brackets with stainless bolts. Mixing a galvanised bolt through a stainless bracket in a wet connection accelerates corrosion of the galvanised part.
