The Trex Range
1. What is Trex composite decking?
Trex is a shell-protected composite decking system — a composite core wrapped in a protective outer shell that resists staining, fading and everyday outdoor wear.
It is one of the longest-established composite decking brands in the world, and it sits at the premium end of our composite range for customers who want a low-maintenance alternative to a hardwood deck.
2. What Trex products does Decking Wood QLD supply?
We carry the Transcend and Transcend Lineage ranges plus the full fastening system:
- Trex Transcend — grooved and square edge decking boards, 5480×140×25mm.
- Trex Transcend Lineage — grooved and square edge decking boards, 5480×140×25mm, with heat-mitigating technology.
- Trex Transcend fascia — 3660×184×14mm.
- Fasteners — Trex starter clips and connector clips for timber and metal substrates, plus the KlevaKlip Snap-LOC clip for Transcend.
Colours and profiles vary in availability, so check the product page before planning around a particular combination.
3. What size are the Trex boards?
All four decking boards — Transcend grooved, Transcend square edge, Lineage grooved and Lineage square edge — are 5480×140×25mm.
The fascia board is 3660×184×14mm: wider and thinner than a decking board, and in a shorter length, so allow for that when setting out a long edge.
4. What is the difference between grooved and square edge?
It changes how the board is fixed and how the finished deck looks.
Grooved boards have a channel down each edge that takes a concealed clip. No screw heads show on the surface, and the clip sets the board gap for you. This is what most of the deck field should be.
Square edge boards have no groove and are face fixed. You need them where a clip cannot reach — the first and last board, the perimeter, stair nosings, border and picture-frame details, and irregular deck shapes.
Most decks need both. Work out your square edge boards at the quoting stage rather than discovering them halfway through the build.
Colours & Matching
5. What colours does Trex Transcend come in?
The grooved boards are available in six colours:
- Tiki Torch
- Havana Gold
- Island Mist
- Spiced Rum
- Lava Rock
- Rope Swing
The square edge boards and the fascia are available in those six plus Gravel Path — seven in total.
6. I want Gravel Path — can I use concealed fixing?
Not as the range currently stands. Gravel Path is listed in square edge and fascia only, not in the grooved board.
A Gravel Path deck would therefore have to be face fixed throughout, with visible screws across the surface. If you want Gravel Path with a screw-free finish, contact us before ordering and we will check what can be brought in.
7. What colours does Transcend Lineage come in?
Four, in both grooved and square edge:
- Biscayne
- Rainier
- Jasper
- Carmel
These are a separate palette from the Transcend colours — none of the names cross over.
8. Is there a matching fascia for a Lineage deck?
This one needs a conversation before you order. The fascia we stock is the Transcend fascia, supplied in the Transcend colours — not the Lineage colours.
So a Biscayne, Rainier, Jasper or Carmel deck has no exact colour-matched fascia in the current range. The options are to pick the closest Transcend fascia colour, to detail the edge using a Lineage square edge board instead, or to ask us to check availability of a Lineage fascia.
Raise it with us at the quoting stage. Edge detail is what makes a deck look finished, and it is an expensive thing to resolve after the boards are down.
Transcend Lineage
9. What is Trex Transcend Lineage?
Lineage is the Transcend range built with heat-mitigating technology — designed to keep the deck surface cooler in direct sun than comparable traditional composite colours.
It has the same shell protection and the same low-maintenance cleaning as the rest of the Transcend range, in a multi-tonal palette aimed at a more contemporary look.
10. Should I choose Lineage over standard Transcend?
The case for Lineage is heat. If the deck faces west or north with no shade, gets used barefoot, or surrounds a pool, the heat-mitigating technology is doing something you will actually notice on a Queensland afternoon.
For a covered alfresco or a shaded deck, heat is less of a factor, and standard Transcend gives you a wider colour choice and a colour-matched fascia.
Worth being clear: cooler does not mean cool. Every deck surface gets hot in full summer sun, and darker colours get hotter in either range.
11. Does Trex get hot in the sun?
Yes — like every decking material, composite included. Darker colours get hotter.
Surface temperature depends on the colour, how much direct sun the deck gets, the ambient temperature and the airflow underneath. For a fully exposed deck that will be walked on barefoot, favour the lighter colours, and look at Lineage for its heat-mitigating technology.
Fixings & Fasteners
12. How is Trex grooved decking fixed?
With concealed clips that sit in the groove between boards, so the finished surface has no screw heads and the board gap stays consistent across the deck.
We stock three fastening options:
- Trex starter clip — for the first board, where there is no adjoining board to connect to. Packs of 36.
- Trex connector clip — the main deck field clip. Packs of 90 or 900.
- KlevaKlip Snap-LOC clip for Trex Transcend — an alternative concealed clip for compatible Transcend boards. Packs of 40.
13. Timber frame or metal frame — does it change the clips?
Yes, and this is the detail to get right before you order.
Both the starter clip and the connector clip come in separate timber-substrate and metal-substrate versions. They are not interchangeable — the fastener supplied with each is made for that frame material.
Confirm whether you are fixing to timber joists or a steel frame, then order the matching version of both clips.
14. Do I need starter clips as well as connector clips?
Yes. They do different jobs and are not substitutes.
The starter clip anchors the first board at the edge of the deck, where only one side has a groove to engage. The connector clip then joins each board to the next through the rest of the field.
You need a run of starter clips along each starting edge plus connector clips for the deck area. Ordering connector clips alone is a common omission and it stops work at the first board.
15. Should I buy the 90-piece or the 900-piece connector clips?
The connector clips come in both pack sizes. For anything beyond a small deck, the 900-piece pack is normally the better buy — work out your clip count from the deck area and joist spacing first rather than guessing.
Send us your deck dimensions and joist centres and we will calculate the starter and connector clip quantities for you, so you are not short 40 clips on the last afternoon.
16. Can I use any composite decking clip with Trex?
No. Use a clip made for the Trex profile — either the Trex clips or the KlevaKlip Snap-LOC clip that is specifically made for Trex Transcend.
Clips from other composite brands are not interchangeable. The clip controls both board retention and board spacing, and the wrong one will not seat correctly in a Trex groove. It can also affect warranty conditions.
Installation
17. Does Trex need a structural subframe?
Yes. Trex boards are a decking surface, not a structural member. They must be laid over a properly designed and built subframe in timber or steel.
Joist spacing, bearer sizing, footings, connections and the deck loads all have to be right independently of the decking. We supply the structural timber, joists, bearers, posts and post supports as well, so the frame and the surface can be quoted together.
18. Does Trex expand and contract?
Yes. All composite decking moves with temperature, and in a Queensland summer that movement is real.
End gaps, side gaps, perimeter clearances and the fastening procedure all need to follow Trex's current installation requirements. A deck laid tight in July will push against itself in January. Allow more in a hot, fully exposed position.
19. What else needs to be right during installation?
- Joist spacing — use Trex's current requirement for the profile you are laying. Do not carry over hardwood decking spacing. Stair treads and diagonal patterns normally need closer centres.
- Ventilation and drainage — the frame must give the clearance and cross-flow airflow specified. Trapped moisture underneath causes more problems than anything else.
- Cut ends — a shell-protected board shows the unshelled core wherever it is cut. Cover cut ends with fascia or a picture-frame board.
- Edge detail — plan the fascia, stair edges and board ends at the same time as the decking, not afterwards.
20. Can Trex be used for stairs?
Yes, provided the stair structure, tread support and Trex's installation requirements are all followed.
The square edge board is particularly useful on stairs for the nosing and edge detail, and the fascia can close off the riser. Treads normally need closer support than the deck field, so check the spacing for the board you are using. We also supply galvanised stair stringers and structural timber.
Maintenance, Warranty & Buying
21. Does Trex need painting, staining or oiling?
No. There is no sanding, staining or oiling cycle — which is the main reason people move across from a hardwood deck.
The shell-protected surface cleans with soap and water. Upkeep is washing and sweeping to clear dirt, leaves and spills, including out of the board gaps, which matters after a Queensland wet season.
22. Is Trex resistant to fading and staining?
The protective shell is specifically there to resist staining and fading, and it does the job well — particularly on an entertaining deck that sees food, drinks and sunscreen.
No product in full Queensland sun stays exactly as supplied indefinitely, though. How much it moves depends on the colour, the exposure and the installation.
23. Is Trex splinter-free?
Yes. It is a manufactured board rather than sawn timber, so it does not splinter.
For pool surrounds, entertaining areas and anywhere the deck gets used barefoot, this is often what decides it against natural timber.
24. What warranty comes with Trex decking?
Trex decking is covered by Trex's applicable manufacturer's warranty, which differs between residential and commercial use and has its own terms and conditions.
Because warranty terms are updated from time to time, ask us and we will provide the current Trex warranty documentation for the exact product before you buy, rather than working from a figure quoted somewhere online. Warranty cover also depends on the deck being installed to Trex's requirements, including the correct fasteners.
25. Is Trex environmentally friendly?
Trex decking is manufactured using recycled and reclaimed material, including reclaimed wood fibre and recycled plastic film, and Trex publishes its own figures on recycled content.
A long service life with no coatings applied over the years is part of the picture too. For the current recycled-content figures and environmental documentation, refer to Trex's published information for the specific product.
26. Can Decking Wood QLD supply the complete Trex deck?
Yes — grooved and square edge boards, fascia, starter clips, connector clips and the Snap-LOC alternative, quantified for your deck rather than guessed at, plus the structural timber, joists, bearers, posts and post supports underneath.
Send us your deck dimensions, your frame material and the colour you want, and we will work out the board and clip quantities, check that the profiles you need exist in that colour, sort out the edge detail, and tell you what is on the shelf. We supply trade and retail, deliver across Queensland, and you can collect from our Archerfield warehouse in Brisbane.
