The 90x42 Merbau Laminated Non-Rebated Batten is a high-grade, engineered timber product, often rated as GL17 or F27, designed for superior strength and durability in both indoor and, primarily, outdoor applications. It is characterized by its reddish-brown color, which matures over time, and its suitability for straight, stable balustrading and handrail installations.
Key Features and Benefits
- Engineering & Stability: As a laminated (glulam) product, it is manufactured from smaller, seasoned pieces of timber joined together, resulting in a "gun-barrel" straight piece with enhanced stability and reduced, predictable movement compared to solid timber.
- Durability & Resistance: Merbau is a Class 1, highly durable, and naturally termite-resistant hardwood. It is ideal for outdoor, above-ground applications.
- Finish & Quality: The product is usually Dressed All Round (DAR), providing a smooth, high-quality finish. It is designed for, and often used in, applications requiring a high-grade clear or stained finish.
- Dimensions: It features a 90mm width and 42mm thickness (90x42), which is considered a standard size for top and bottom rails.
- Non-Rebated Profile: The "non-rebated" (or flat) profile makes it versatile for various fixing methods, including direct fastening or using specialized brackets, as it does not have a pre-cut groove for vertical balusters.
- Strength Class: Commonly available in GL17 (Glue Laminated Strength Class) or F27 (Solid Stress Grade) for structural reliability.
- Compliance: Many of these products are manufactured according to AS/NZS 1328 for glued laminated structural timber.
Maintenance and Installation Notes
- Tannin Leeching: Merbau is a tannin-rich hardwood; it is essential to prepare the timber and allow for tannin bleeding, which can stain light-colored surfaces during the first few weeks of weathering.
- Coating: While durable, it is recommended to coat the timber with oil or sealer to maintain its color and prevent surface cracking.
- Lengths: Available in various lengths, including 3.6m, 4.8m, 5.4m, and 6.0m.
Note: This product is sometimes referred to as Kwila, particularly in Papua New Guinea.
